The Phantom of the Opera 2004 February 19, 2005 L. Bartel (ARIZONA) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I've seen this movie 4 times and I just love it! I can't wait for the dvd! The music is so beautiful and the actress who plays Christine(Emmy Rossum) has such a beautiful voice for being only 17 years old! What a talent! The sets were so awesome you felt as if you were there! Phantom is such a wonderful love story and a wonderful lesson in not judging people for what's on the outside but seeing them for what's in the inside.
FIVE STARS!
For the romantic- no matter what age February 20, 2005 E. Crites (Central Oregon) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
There are few movies that I ponder long after I see them and this is one of them. The music stayed in my mind for days and now I have the CD so I can listen anytime I like.
I was awed with the beauty of the sets, the attention to detail in the costumes which were elegant, and the emotion and passion from the actors drew me into their world for the whole 2 hours and 20 minutes. I didn't want it to end. In fact, I have had to see it 4 more times. It seems to engage me at the level of my own desire to love and be loved. We, at some time in our lives, may experience rejection, hurt and betrayal and maybe even feel a little inferior to others. All this worked to draw me into the story of these characters even at my grandmotherly age!
In fact, the matinees that I attend seem to be evenly divided between the young high school students who are being introduced to something like opera since there are 3 parts of "operas" as part of the movie, and retired folks like me.
When the movie ends, there is complete silence for awhile. Most of us seem totally entranced by what we just saw.
I have not seen the stage play and knew little about what to expect before seing this movie. I was blown away. Try to see it on the big screen. I know that I will have this movie in my collection!
MAKE THAT 10 STARS !!! February 15, 2005 Donna Z (LINDENHURST, NY United States) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have seen the movie twice, and I an thrilled with the results.!!! Both times I walked out of the theatre weak and so emotional! I even cried more the second time around!! I saw the show on Broadway about 10 years ago, and back then I was just blown away with the love story, the music and the whole experience. I feel the same way about the movie.
I LOVE the casting, and I was initially dissapointed that Antonio Banderas was not cast, as his name was mentioned for years and the movie Phantom role. But after seeing the movie, I can only say I am happy it took so long to come to the screen because they were waiting for all the actors to come together.
Emmy Rossum is fantastic and glorious; Patrick Wilson has a beautiful crystaline voice, and his character should; and Gerard Butler is BRILLIANT as the Phantom. My intial reaction was who the heck is Gerard Butler ??? His voice has an edge to it, and nobody said he had to sing like Michael Crawford. For years I knew and loved the soundtrack with Michael Crawford and Sara Brightman. Now, I can't even think about listening to the stage show soundtrack because I now have the movie soundtrack.
Why do people constantly criticize Patrick Wilson as being "wooden"?? His character is the way it is supposed to be, as a direct contrast to the Phantom's character. The nature of Raoul's character adds to Christine's dilema as to who she should choose: blond and good versus dark and fiery ??
The movie is visually stunning, the music is overwhelming, and the whole experience is so emotional and fantastic. Patrick Wlson mentioned in the "HBO First Look: Making of the Phantom of the Opera" short feature that the movie enables you to get into the characters more closely. You can see the Phantom's eyes, and even though he is a murderer, by the end of the movie you are in love with him. How true !!
I plan to go again this Sunday to see Phantom. The movie stands in it's own right, as does the stage show currently on Broadway (17 years and still going)and elsewhere around the world. The movie opens up a whole new audience for the Phantom of the Opera experience, and I am also waiting very anxiously for the DVD to be released!!!
"Phantom" should have been an Oscar nominee February 19, 2005 Florence Meier 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I have seen "Phantom of the Opera" twice at the theater and have thoroughly enjoyed it each time. I don't understand why many critics have not been as enthusuastic. The cinematography is wonderful, the sets beautiful, and the singing marvelous. I highly recommend it. I can't wait for the DVD to come out.
Sexy, Amazing & entertaining February 19, 2005 Alberto Cruise 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I can summarize this movie with one word "WOW". This is probably one of the best musicals I have seen & enjoyed in ages. Gerard Butler is one amazing & sexy phantom. I saw it 3 days in a row, & just can't wait to add the DVD to my collection.
