Cellfire Coupons on your Cell Phone

Cellfire Normally I'm averse to additional advertising in my life, but a new company called Cellfire is doing something I actually find useful. The company partners with businesses to send coupons to your cell phone. You sign up for the service and it text messages you a coupon code for things like free DVD rentals from Hollywood Video, free appetizers from TGI Friday's, and discounts off regionally specific companies like North Beach Pizza and Red Rock Espresso in the Bay Area. Presumably the line up of companies gets more interesting once they get all the logistics figured out and have a sales force. The current rub is you need to be a Cingular customer and have an LG, Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Siemens or Sony Ericsson phone (at least for now). All you Treo and Windows Mobile fans are out of luck in the short term. I like the idea, but I'm not sure how local retailers will take to having me show them a coupon on my phone when I walk in to get a movie or buy pizza. I'd gripe about the potential charge for text messages, but I have yet to use my monthly quota so I might as well get something of value in return for unused service.
