Universal Movie Downloads
Universal Pictures is launching a download-to-own movie service starting with the release of King Kong on April 10, according to an article on CNN. The plan is to make download versions available, with a DVD to follow by mail, priced at $35 for new release titles and $17 for classic titles. The price includes a PC quality video, a portable device ready video and the DVD. While I think they'd do better to keep the whole package under $30, I applaud them for thinking in the right direction. This is the type of service Sony could have built for PSP owner, instead of making everyone by a UMD and a DVD. No word yet on which portable devices are supported, but I would assume it will be either iPods or PlaysForSure devices since those are the two most likely candidates for supplying DRM.
