French Forcing Apple to Play Fair?
The iPod / iTunes universe has been closed to competing music stores from day one, with the exception of DRM free venues like eMusic and MP3Tunes. French lawmakers in the National Assembly are trying to change this by introducing a bill to force Apple, Sony and other closed shop DRM service providers into licensing technology to allow for competing alternatives on the iPod. In general, I think the French are approaching this the wrong way; they should be attempting to force Apple to allow competing solutions like Windows Media DRM access to the service so iPod owners get the benefit of subscription music services like Yahoo and Napster, but any alternative is better than an Apple only alternative. Think where we'd be if DVDs from Sony only played in Sony DVD players?
