eMusic Adds More Indie Music
Back in February, eMusic indicated they've sold 45 million downloads over the past two years, which is tiny in comparison to Apple's reported download numbers, but interesting in the sense that eMusic doesn't sell what most people think of as Top 40 music. Today at eHomeUpgrade I see eMusic just added another 40 labels to their music library, for a total of 4,000 labels covering all genres. eMusic is selling these downloads as MP3 files with no DRM, beating the per download sales figures of everyone but Apple, with the total downloads for January 2006 at 4.9 million. While the eMusic library still doesn't have much in the way of multi-platinum selling artists, their niche content library is stellar with old Green Day and The Pixies mixing it up with newer music from The Decemberists, Thievery Corporation and Cat Power, along with a large collection of jazz and classical. If you want music you can take with you on an iPod without the restrictions of Apple's DRM. No you won't find any Brittney Spears, but did you really want to?
