Google reinvents broadcast television?
Robert X. Cringely seems to think Google is building a multicast system on the dark fiber, putting massive server installations at key Internet hops to reduce latency in information delivery. If true, IPTV becomes a direct competitor to broadcast television. Now the rub here is a limit to the amount of bandwidth we currently receive at home. I'm getting a theoretical 8mbps down with a real 6mbps. Next year that theoretical limit increases to 10mbps, which might be enough to get HD content on demand. So while a Google multicast network looks interesting, the delivery might be less than our expectations.
