A Meltdown in WebProNews Credibility
Apparently some confusion in the press room at SES San Jose which resulted in a staff writer, David Utter, forgot to check his facts.
David's Inside Search blog leads with the sensationalist headline "A Lockergnome Meltdown at SES 2005" followed by a wild exaggeration of some events that transpired during check-in for coverage of the event.
As David puts it:
A report of a mildly unpleasant exchange between Chris Pirillo and the Jupitermedia staff at SES 2005's press table entered the WebProNews inbox today.
How have people treated you at SES 2005? Polite? Helpful? Otherwise? (Jupitermedia staff only for that last one.) Share your experiences at WebProWorld.
It seems that famed Lockergnome publisher Chris Pirillo nearly needed to have to run to a local Kinko's to prove to Jupitermedia staff that he did indeed qualify as a member of the online media.
The only thing accurate about this article is that Kinko's came up in conversation while Chris was in the room. The wisecrack came from my mouth, not Chris's. Make no mistake, David, it was a wise crack, not a meltdown. And my comment came several minutes after Chris was already wearing his press badge.
I was pre-registered as press for SES and somewhere along the way my badge got lost. No big deal, these things happen. The woman behind the desk in press registration told me my business card didn't garner press admittance because it lacked a title. I (not Chris) sarcastically suggested I'd be happy to stop at Kinko's and print one with the appropriate title if it would speed things along. A Jupitermedia employee jumped in at that point and said showing her the site would be fine.
And just so you have your facts straight David, I later apologized for my snarkiness to the Jupitermedia employee.
If you'd like to have a conversation about this on the record, to get the real story, my microphone is standing by.
