France Supports Fair Use
I read very little French, so I'm taking it somewhat on faith that this English translation of the French Decision is accurate. On 22 April 2005 the Paris Court of Appeal granted French consumer protection organization, UFC-Que, a prohibition on DVD copy protection devices. The basis of the decision is that CSS and other digital content protection schemes are in direct opposition with the rights of private citizens to make personal copies of copyrighted works. To French film companies, Les Films Alain Sarde and Studio Canal, have 30 days from the date of the decision to unblock their DVDs to allow copying. No word on how this might impact foreign DVD titles sold in France or what the implications are considering the contradiction between this ruling and the European Union Copyright Directive, which is theoretically observed by all EU member countries.
