Tivo, the Apple Media Center?

It makes sense for a company with rabidly brand-loyal customers to buy out another company with brand-loyal customers when their two businesses and cultures fit together. According to Reuters Apple is rumored to be interested in Tivo. I'm no corporate strategist, so it's hard to say whether the two companies could fit together easily, but two things are certain - Apple needs a DVR product and Tivo needs a savior. Apple's iLife concentrates heavily on the media creation side of the digital lifestyle, paying little interest to the space where most people do the majority of their media consumption, the television screen. Tivo excels at time shifting TV in a closed box system with more perceived reliability than PC based solutions like Windows Media Center, which makes for a perfect marriage to Apple's product strategy of making elegant products designed to keep you within the Apple universe. We'll have to watch for signs of any substantiation to the rumor, but from where I'm sitting a Tivo solution that ties into the iPod CE experience looks like a smart play for Apple. Posted by Jake
