All I Wanna Do Is Burn DVDs....
So I get this new DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW drive from an unnamed manufacturer. I install it, it appears to work, but when I try to actually use any CD or DVD media in it, the software on the discs errors every time. I contact the online chat support and start explaining the situation. Before I get any level of resolution, I'm cut off from further help. When I respond shocked that I got nothing from the chat, I'm accused of lying about what was in the chat session. Unless I'm blind, I was not given the phone number to call support until after I suggested I should return the drive.
Below is the transcript of my conversation, with phone numbers and company names removed to avoid getting my butt sued.
Dawn has joined this session!
Dawn says, Hello, my name is Dawn. May I have your full name and phone number please?
You say, Jake Ludington XXX.XXX.XXXX
Dawn says, What software Will not see the drivers?
You say, Any CD/DVD that I put in the drive generates errors
You say, I can put the same CD in my other CD drive and it will work fine
You say, I've tried several CDs
Dawn says, How do you have the drive connected?
You say, As master via IDE
You say, In attempting to install Adobe Acrobat 5 for example, the software generates an error indicating a dll is missing
You say, However, if I put the same CD in my other drive, which is the slave drive to the DVD drive it works fine
Dawn says, What is the exact error?
You say, In the case of the software CD that came with the DVD drive it is either ???????????????????
You say, or it says there is a problem with the Macromedia Player
You say, With Acrobat 5, the error says AutoPlay.exe - Unable to Locate Component
You say, The application has failed to start because A.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem
You say, The error with the software installation DVD that came with the drive is a Director Player Error
You say, Unable to load movie playlist. Does the .INI file exist? It must contain a section '[Movies]' with an entry 'Movie01=Pathname.dir'
Dawn says, Will the drive read the software disc that came with the drive?
You say, Only sort of
You say, It recognizes that there are files and folders on the drive
Dawn says, What does that mean
You say, If you browse to a specific installation package, like MyDVD
You say, and click the Setup.exe file
You say, it says that Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close
Dawn says, Thank you for using the XXXX Technical Support chat service. In a few minutes, a transcript of your chat session will be emailed to the address that you provided at the time of login. Have a nice day.
You say, wow, so that's the help I get?
You say, I'll just return the drive, thanks for nothing
Dawn says, PleasI stated above Please call in to Tech support 800-588-3847
You say, and it said that where? I'll call, but that's the first time that was suggested
Dawn says, Right before you stated about the Setup.exe
You say, OK, I'm sure you don't believe this, but the phone number is nowhere in the chat session until I said I was returning the drive, anyway, I'll call them
Dawn says, Sir yes it is.
Update: I received an e-mail transcript of the conversation, and of course the number was suggested where Dawn said it was, but on my screen, there was no mention of any other support option - just thanks, see ya later.
